Increase consumption of cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, cauliflower, kale, radicchio and turnips contain plant phyto chemicals and indoles that help the liver flush out artificial estrogens that collect in the body from external sources like environmental toxins such as house hold chemicals, skin creams, detergents. Cruciferous vegetables contain substances called ‘phyto-estrogens’ that can protect against estrogen related diseases like endometriosis. Photo-estrogens do this by binding to excess estrogen in the gut and thereby encouraging its elimination[1].


Phyto-estrogens are plant compounds that mimic a weak version of estrogen in the body. All cells have estrogen receptors that act like a lock, with estrogen as the key for certain processes. Phyto-estrogens can block this lock and key system thereby preventing the activation of excess estrogen.


It is recommended to cook (at least briefly) most cruciferous veggies, though, since when eaten raw, these veggies may interfere with thyroid function. Cabbage contains a compound that shifts estrogen to a safer form. Aim for 2 servings of cruciferous veggies per day.
